QUOTE A large DDoS is hard to stop since many hundred machines are involved in seimply trying to overload a site. But the DDoS we are seeing right now is a smaller scale. A few machine. So it is simply a matter to identify the ip of those machines and to filter them at the firewall level.
what do the machines do? Just try to connect to the site at the same time over and over?

QUOTE Other actions are also being taken and considered. Possibly legal ones.
you can sue a group of people for a attack like this?

yes its hacking its not very legal. why are they attacking? hmm do you want some help i might be able to get my hacker friends to help you if its needed.

hey just a question, doesnt a DDos attack make it appear that there are more people online?

QUOTE (wittyfox @ Oct 11 2006, 12:42 AM)what do the machines do? Just try to connect to the site at the same time over and over? Basicly yes. A DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) is when all those machines open multiple connection and send random data in an attempt to make our servers so busy answering junk that they can't answer legitamate requests anymore.

QUOTE (wittyfox @ Oct 11 2006, 12:42 AM)you can sue a group of people for a attack like this? Hacking has always been illigal. In the past, the problem was that the laws were not clear as to what punishement it involved. Most times, people were convicted of "causing financial harm". But under the latest US laws (anti-terrorist laws) hacking is now a well defined criminal act. In other words, you go to jail for it. Many other countries have also upgraded their laws to included hacking as a serious offense similar to qualified stealing.

QUOTE (wwwwww @ Oct 11 2006, 03:44 AM)hey just a question, doesnt a DDos attack make it appear that there are more people online? No a DDoS usally uses random data to oeverwhelme the servers. That way, the attacking machines can concentrate on sending data instead of building valid HTTP requests.
